The Tokheim Corporation is the largest designer, manufacturer and service provider of electronic and mechanical petroleum dispensing systems such as petroleum dispensers, meters and pumps and point-of-sale systems. Among the tools that the company uses to provide value-added services is their Virtual Classroom, and in 1998 Kurt Stirnkorb had the opportunity to create the first version of this using ASP. That first version has since gone the way of the dinosaurs but it was far from a prehistoric solution, featuring the ability to authenticate valid users and grant them access to a series of online quizzes created from randomly generated questions pulled from a database. At the end of each quiz 'students' were graded then given a final exam. Upon passing a certificate was awarded that could be downloaded and or printed out to herald their recognition of being certified to buy petroleum dispensing products from Tokheim.
